[edited] by R. E. Emmerick.
- xxv, 134 pages, 20 plates : facsims, 23 cm.
- London oriental series, volume, 23. .
Khotanese translation from the original Buddhist Sanskrit text. Khotanese text with English translation on facing pages. Includes partial text of the Tibetan version.
Includes bibliographical references.
The present volume contains an edition of all that is known to survive of a Khotanese translation made from the original Buddhist Sanskrit text of the Su- rangamasamādhisūtra, an important early Mahayanist work. The Khotanese text is accompanied by a facing English transla- tion. Most of the text is here translated for the first time. Where there are gaps in the Khotanese text the context is given by the provision of a translation made from the Tibetan version. An edition of the corresponding portion of the Tibetan text, based on four blockprints, is also included. Additional aids are a com- mentary on the Khotanese translation, a complete index of the Khotanese with the corresponding Tibetan rendering accompanying each word, and photo- graphs of the Khotanese original.
The Khotanese text is important in two ways. A comparison of the Khotanese translation with other translations adds considerably to our knowledge of Khota- nese; and, since the original Sanskrit text is no longer extant, the Khotanese translation, which there is reason to regard as accurate, because it is based on the original Sanskrit, furthers our know- ledge of the Sürańgamasamādhisūtra.
The author is Lecturer in Iranian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Among his other published works are three volumes in the London Oriental Serien, Tibetan Texts concerning Khotan (19), Saka Grammatical Studies (20), and The Book of Zambasta (21)
